Hello! Chris Donlan here. David Goldfarb, our regular columnist, is away this week, so I've asked Rob Fearon to write something instead and he has very kindly agreed. Rob designs wonderful arcade games such as DRM (which does not include DRM) and he is also a brilliant writer. I know: what a massive jerk. I really hope you enjoy what he's come up with today. Also, look at THIS.

I grew up in an all too typical 1980's northern town. Factories closed, unemployment rose. First friends of the family left jobless, then my parents. The stinking grey skies a reminder that the wheels of industry still turned close, the lack of food in the cupboard and the tears and upset a constant reminder of how out of reach most work in the area remained.

Sony expects a significant loss next year too

Sony's annual financial report is out and it ain't pretty. As expected, the company posted a billion-dollar overall loss (-$1.26bn/£746m). That's despite sales as a whole being 14.3 per cent up ($76bn/£45bn).

Sony's reason for the huge loss was, as has been publicly talked about before, restructuring - particularly selling off its PC business and splitting the TV business out into its own thing. Sony's been selling off headquarters in the US and Japan, selling shares and foregoing bonuses trying to offset these costs.

PS4 sales do the business for Sony

Impressive sales of the PlayStation 4 helped Sony post increased profit in its recent financial quarter.

In its financial reports Sony lumps sales of all home PlayStation consoles together, so we don't have an updated figure for the PS4 (it was 4.2m as of 28th December 2013). However, we do know that PS4 and PS3 sales combined were for the quarter ending 31st December 2013 7.8m. Combined Vita and PSP sales for the quarter were 2m.

Sony creates custom PS3 hardware for PlayStation Now

Sony has developed brand new PS3 hardware to power its PlayStation Now streaming service, revealed earlier this month at CES in Las Vegas. Sources who have been briefed on the project suggest that the new PlayStation 3 consists of eight custom console units built into a single rack server. It's the new PlayStation hardware that everyone will have access to, but few will actually see.

Initially, Digital Foundry has learned that Sony experimented by placing standard retail units into datacentres, but plans to use this for the actual PlayStation Now service were shelved for a number of reasons. For starters there's the sheer space requirement, along with power efficiency issues, as even the most recent PS3 hardware can still draw up to 80W from the mains. Sony's engineers were able to mitigate both issues by shrinking the equivalent of eight PS3s onto a single motherboard, housed in a slimline server cabinet.

Sony's Knack to get free puzzle game app

Sony no longer views iOS and Android as rivals, but as tools to be used to spread the PlayStation message via related spin-off apps. That's according to Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida, speaking in the first instalment of a wide ranging interview with

"We've totally changed our approach to mobile products like smartphones and tablets," he says. "In the past, we felt like these guys were competition to our portable games, in general - but now, everyone owns these smartphones and tablets. It's like everyone had a PC before - it's a tool that people use every day."

Sony's E3 victory was a PR stunt, but PlayStation 4 is still the one to watch

The reaction was "quite extraordinary", in the words of SCEE boss Jim Ryan, and it's hard to argue with him. I've been to Sony press conferences since ECTS and I don't think I've ever seen a reception like this one. But after the swell of excitement subsided I got to thinking, if all Sony has done is stand still and watch Microsoft volley itself in the face repeatedly, then surely this victory is rather illusive? How does doing the same thing again meet the underlying challenges PlayStation faces in 2013?

Let's recap. PlayStation 4 costs what a new console often costs - £349. It has a mixture of games on discs and digital downloads. It charges a subscription for online play. This model sounds familiar! And while we've already laid into Microsoft's hoary old Xbox One line-up, Sony's first-party offering isn't that much more exciting. Take The Order: 1886 - it looked interesting for a while there, like a sort of steampunk A-Team in the days of Jack the Ripper - but then they threw open the carriage door and it was Gears of Whitechapel. Pass! (At least that's not "Online Pass", I suppose.)
