Black Friday 2017: Staples' deals include iPad and Amazon Alexa

Continuing the trend of US-based retailers announcing their Black Friday deals ahead of the event itself, Staples' has now announced a nice big batch of its upcoming Black Friday deals, including discounts on Amazon Alexa enabled devices (such as the Echo, Dot, etc) as well as Apple iPads, HP laptops and more.

Stores are set to open up at 7 am on Black Friday itself, which for the record takes place on Friday, 24th November 2017. That being said, the arguably much better option is to do your shopping on Staples' website and pick up your purchases in-store on Black Friday itself. That way, you won't be risking your life to quite the same extent and your purchases will be safely reserved, helping you avoid battling through the crowds.

My word game rage shame

Earlier this month I became a published author. Don't worry, this isn't about to become a thousand-word plug for my book, which is out now on Amazon for barely a fiver, and consistently receiving glowing reviews. (Sample: "Literally the best book i have ever written. 7/10" - Ellie Gibson)

I wrote the book with my dear friend, comedy buddy and above all business associate, Helen Thorn. People often ask me what it's like to write with someone else. I reply that it's an enriching experience, because you have access not only to instantaneous critique, but help with channelling the creative flow. Best of all, you only have to write half the words.

The case for a video game musical

After years and years of protestation, I have something to admit: I bloody love musicals. I'm not sure why I've felt it hard to tell people about my love of a good old-fashioned story-driven sing-song - it's probably a combination of schoolyard intimidation and terrible memories of one production of Yeoman Of The Guard.

Still, the recent, splendiferous successes of Hamilton and La La Land have finally coaxed me into saying that I think musicals are downright amazing. But there's a problem. While I've been able to enjoy seeing a musical on stage, on the cinema screen, on the TV or listening to the score at home, I've never played one. The video game musical, or the video game based on the musical, is a thing that - for the most part - doesn't seem to exist.

Watch: Ian plays the charmingly bonkers Hidden My Game By Mom

For this week's Tuesday stream, I'm going to be playing a game that almost certainly would have been my game of 2016, if I hadn't discovered it early on in 2017. Maybe it'll be my game of 2017, but since we're only mid-January

Hidden My Game By Mom is a charming but utterly bonkers (in a lovely way) 'escape the room' game by a Japanese developer named Hap Inc. which really should be played by everyone.

Watch Pokémon GO parodied by Square Enix

Square Enix Montréal, the developer of Hitman GO, Lara Croft GO, and the upcoming Deus Ex GO, has released the following short video of what its version of Pokémon GO might have looked like:

Keeping in line with Square Enix Montréal's previous "GO"-themed spin-offs, we see Pokémon protagonist Ash Ketchum um, encounter Pikachu. It's not clear if he's punching the little fella or capturing him, but one way or another he removes the fluffy creature from the board.

Minecraft will no longer allow companies to promote products in-game

Minecraft developer Mojang is cracking down on the sorts of creations people erect in its procedurally-generated sandbox. The gist is that people can still make whatever they want, unless it's specifically to promote an unrelated product. That's now against the user guidelines.

"We want to empower our community to make money from their creativity, but we're not happy when the selling of an unrelated product becomes the purpose of a Minecraft mod or server," said Mojang's director of creative communications, Owen Hill, in a blog post.

Zelda's browser-based fan remake shut down by Nintendo

Earlier this week a couple of hardcore Zelda fans put up a browser-based remake of the original The Legend of Zelda made with voxels to commemorate the series' 30th anniversary. Now that fan tribute has been removed due to Nintendo issuing a copyright strike.

"Nintendo asked us to remove Zelda 30 Tribute from the inter-web for copyright infringement. I guess it was a little too pixel perfect," developers Scott Lininger and Mike Magee said on project's page.

The truth about cats and dogs (playing video games)

When video games breached people's homes in the late 70s they were considered a toy for children. As time's moved on much of society has acclimated to the idea that they're for adults too. Nowadays with a smartphone in everyone's pocket it's not unusual to see a senior citizen engage in a quick game of Words with Friends or a toddler poking around with Tiny Wings. But why stop at humans? If games are truly for everybody, shouldn't we bring our cherished pastimes to our pals in the animal kingdom?

And indeed we have! Buried in the App Store and Google Play, there's a market for mini-games intended to be played by pets. It's an ingenious idea - I mean, who in the right mind wouldn't want to play video games with their furry, four-legged friends - but also one subject to skepticism. Are these Apps really making our animals happier? Or are they thoughtless cash grabs preying on our instinct to pamper our pets? Furthermore, how big is demand in the games-for-pets market anyway?

Several prominent voice actors have voted to strike

Voice actors union SAG-AFTRA may initiate a strike if enough of its members vote to do so by 5th October.

SAG-AFTRA isn't small potatoes either, as several of video games' biggest voice actors are members. People like Jennifer Hale, Wil Wheaton and Ashly Burch are all members who have voted in favour of the strike which would prevent them from doing any voice acting until an agreement among various major publishers can be reached.

Video: How Star Wars: Uprising connects Return of Jedi to Force Awakens

Star Wars games have a patchy history - some of them make great use of the rich universe they're set in and even enrich it further.

Others use it as a quick way to make a cheap buck off poor Star Wars fans who should probably know better (yes, that's everyone who bought Kinect Star Wars).
