The Double-A Team: We need more games like Child of Light

When Child of Light was released in 2014, it was well-received by major outlets and players alike. The game was praised for its gorgeous aesthetic, incredible soundtrack, and a unique and challenging combat system. However, some of the game's criticisms included a lack of character customization, simplistic skill trees, jarring rhyming dialogue, and easy battles. But despite these criticisms, one important point remains: we need more games like Child of Light.

In a Polygon interview with the game's creative director, Patrick Plourde, he explained that the game came about because he wanted to play something with his son. The character of Igniculus, therefore, was meant to be played by a second player. Since this was a game created with a child and a parent in mind, it easily explains the simple skill trees, the fairy-tale story, and the ease of the combat system.

Sony ending credit card, debit card, and PayPal payments on PlayStation 3 and Vita

Sony may have given the PlayStation 3 and Vita stores a last minute reprieve earlier this year following a consumer backlash, but its plans to rein in its legacy services continue, with the company now announcing it'll soon be removing the option to pay for items using credit cards, debit cards, and PayPal on its older consoles.

Writing on its Discontinued PlayStation apps, features and services page, Sony says customers will no longer be able to use the aforementioned payment options to either purchase digital content or to add funds to their wallets directly from their PS3 or Vita starting on 27th October.

Becoming the Dark Soul

It's somehow 10 years since the release of Dark Souls - perhaps the most significant release of the last decade, in fact, given the huge impact From Software's meticulously designed adventure has had. To celebrate we're returning to one of our favourite pieces of writing about the game, from none other than Souls connoisseur Rich Stanton.

I love the Great Grey Wolf Sif, and have fought alongside her. I have killed her five times across PC and Xbox 360, and the last was the one that mattered. With other Dark Souls bosses, I enjoy Summoning other players to help. But never with Sif. The fight is one that saddens me. It is a duel to be savoured, a consummation devoutly to be wished.

Whatever happened to City of Metronome, the missing game by Little Nightmares developer Tarsier?

Downtown Los Angeles, 2005. A hot, bloated, extravagant E3, and everyone more excited than normal because it's new-console year. PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Revolution (Wii) are all at the show, and anything labelled "next-gen" is stampeded. Perhaps that's how a group of Swedish students, with no publisher and no track record, manage to entice people to see their game.

But, there is something exciting about what they're doing. Their game is different, darker, and more off-beat than mainstream games usually are. It's set in a dark city of warped rooftops and gnarled horizons, a place run by a malicious Corporation and its mysterious world-building machine, powered, it seems, by the souls of children. Children sent back out to work in the city as mindless zombies dubbed metrognomes.
