RBC funds lower fees if you don;t use an adviser

Yet one more reason not to use an adviser: Rob Carrick tells us that RBC will lower the fees on a bunch of their funds if you buy them through their direct brokerage arm. So why pay more for an adviser who will make you buy the same funds you could easily pick yourself?

The new fees don't come close enough to ETFs though in my opinion. They will remain above 1% where ETFs are typically under 0.7%.

Fix your finances now: "Fight procrastination!"

If you're like me, you often delay important tasks in your personal finances (portfolio rebalancing anyone? :-)

Dave Cheong has an excellent detailed post on fighting procrastination. Here's a sample of what he says:

  • Pace yourself: Don’t go our strong only to burn out before you get to the finish line. Pace yourself. Break the problem down into smaller chunks and tackle each in turn. You may also apply other great problem solving nuggets.
  • Stay motivated: Big and important tasks often require hard work and dedication. Often it’s not a sprint but more of a marathon. Keep yourself motivated with appropriate rewards at key milestones and work within the 10R Success framework.
  • Do it now: Don’t let the Broken Windows Theory eventuate. Take on problems early and often, before they get too big and too hard to overcome.

The ups and downs of speculative investing

I am having a good run with junior stocks (mostly uranium and gold) although they went down somewhat recently. I only put a small amount of money in those stocks just for fun and to try to make some extra money. I still hope that my odds are better than going at the casino :-) Please don't do this unless you're fully aware of the extremely high risks (I could lose it all in a single day!).

I bought all of them early this year with pretty much the same amount in each. Here's my scorecard so far ... you'll see that it's not only positive:
